Why UK employers reject overseas CVs: the Equality Act and ATS parsing
Two forces filter your CV before a human reads it. First, the Equality Act 2010 prohibits discrimination on protected characteristics including age, race, sex, and marital status. Any CV carrying a photo, date of birth, marital status, or national ID number signals to a compliant employer that you do not understand UK hiring norms — and many recruiters bin such CVs immediately to avoid bias risk. Strip all of it: keep your name, city (not full street address), UK-format phone number, professional email, and LinkedIn URL. Second, most sponsors run applicant tracking systems that parse plain text. Tables with merged cells, text boxes, icons, headers and footers, and two-column layouts all break parsing and scramble your work history into nonsense. Use a single-column layout, standard headings (Personal Statement, Work Experience, Education, Skills), bullet points starting with action verbs, and a common font at 10–11pt. Export as a text-selectable PDF, never as an image or a photo of a document. A two-page maximum applies, with one page strongly preferred for candidates under eight years of experience. Get these two filters right and your CV actually reaches the hiring manager — most overseas applicants never clear them.
Sponsorship header phrasing with SOC 2020 code examples
Sponsors need to see, in one line, that hiring you is administratively viable. Place a short sponsorship header directly beneath your name and personal statement. Proven phrasing includes: Requires Skilled Worker sponsorship. Target role: SOC 2134 Programmers and software development professionals, salary expectation aligned to the going rate. For healthcare: Registered Nurse (NMC pin applied for), target role SOC 2231 Nurses, Health and Care Worker visa route. For engineering: Civil Engineer, 6 years dams and highways experience, target role SOC 2121 Civil engineers. Concrete examples help the recruiter match you to their sponsor licence: a software developer quoting SOC 2134 at 42,000 pounds signals awareness of the going rate; a nurse quoting SOC 2231 at 27,000 pounds signals the Health and Care route; a civil engineer quoting SOC 2121 shows the role sits on the skilled-occupation list. Never write willing to relocate at own cost as a substitute for sponsorship clarity — sponsors need the visa route named, not vague flexibility. Keep the header to one or two lines and expand the story in your cover letter, where you confirm you understand the Certificate of Sponsorship process and meet the English language requirement.
2026 salary thresholds: standard, new entrant, and Health & Care rates
Salary is the most common silent rejection reason. The widely referenced 2026 figures are 41,700 pounds per year for the standard Skilled Worker threshold, 33,400 pounds for new entrants (typically under-26s, recent graduates, or those switching from Student or Graduate routes), and 25,000 pounds for Health and Care Worker roles — in every case subject to the higher of the threshold or the occupation-specific going rate for your SOC code. Your CV must make the maths easy: list your current or expected salary band near the sponsorship header only if it clears the bar, and quantify seniority (team size led, budget owned, patients per shift) so the reader believes the figure. New entrants should state the route explicitly, for example: Eligible for New Entrant rate (MSc completed 2024). Health and Care applicants should name the employer type — NHS Trust, adult social care provider, or GP surgery — because the reduced threshold only applies to qualifying sponsors. Thresholds and the Immigration Salary List change: always cross-check the live Home Office guidance before interviews, and use our UK visa guide alongside the United Kingdom country page to confirm your occupation still qualifies.
NHS Band 5 and GMC CV differences vs London tech CVs
One UK template does not fit both audiences. An NHS Band 5 nurse CV leads with NMC registration status and pin number (or application date), band equivalence, ward specialities, shift patterns covered, and mandatory training: Basic Life Support, manual handling, infection control, and safeguarding levels. GMC-track doctor CVs add PLAB status, rotations with dates and hospital names, audits and quality-improvement projects, and references formatted to NHS Jobs standards. Quantify clinically: 30-bed acute medical ward, night shifts included. London tech CVs invert the structure: the personal statement becomes three lines on stack and impact, work experience bullets lead with shipped outcomes (cut API latency 40 percent, served 2M requests per day), and a technical skills strip names languages, frameworks, and cloud platforms for ATS keyword matching. Both versions stay photo-free and single-column, but the keyword sets differ completely — clinical governance terms for NHS filters, SOC-mapped stack terms for tech filters. Build each version separately in our resume builder rather than sending one generic CV to both worlds.
